Ole Miss, Chambliss spoil Kiffin's return to Oxford, upset LSU

Image
OXFORD, Miss. -- Lane Kiffin's new team at LSU couldn't deny Trinidad Chambliss - the quarterback Kiffin helped transform into a star after recruiting him from a Division II program to Ole Miss last year. Chambliss passed for 363 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a tiebreaking score in the fourth quarter, and No. 8 Ole Miss delighted a crowd that was already revved up about Kiffin's return, beating the seventh-ranked Tigers 32-24 on Saturday night. LSU stormed back from a 24-7 halftime deficit to tie the game before Chambliss engineered a 75-yard touchdown drive without the services of top running back Kewan Lacy, who left the game with an injured left shoulder. Chambliss faked a handoff and ran 14 yards against the grain, outracing LSU safety Ty Benefield to the pylon, and Ole Miss (3-0, 1-0 SEC) added a 2-point conversion to take an eight-point lead with 6:14 to go. LSU answered by driving 69 yards to the Ole Miss 6 before Sam Leavitt missed open tight end Zach Grace...

Fans in Ole Miss’ Grove mock Lane Kiffin but tout their ‘hospitality’ as he returns with LSU

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Only one year ago, Mississippi fans hailed Lane Kiffin as the coach who helped them beat border-state rival LSU . On Saturday, as the No. 8 Rebels prepared to host No. 7 LSU, Ole Miss fans were eager to mock and heckle Kiffin in myriad ways — and did so amid abundant security measures designed to ensure any expressions of betrayal, resentment or anger didn’t get out of hand as the lightning-rod coach returned to campus, this time with the Tigers. The scene made Jessica Perkins, a 47-year-old Oxford-area dentist and Ole Miss graduate, a bit nervous as she stood under a tent on the edge of the university’s famous, tree-lined tailgating area known as The Grove. She noted lightheartedly that “absolutely nothing good” can happen when “the added animosity of the Kiffin situation” is layered upon longstanding rivals indulging in a full day of alcohol consumption in oppressively hot weather — mostly sunny and in the mid-90s Fahrenheit. “Let’s just play football and ...

U.S. Has Reached Security Deal on Greenland, Trump Says

Image
President Trump said on Friday that his administration had reached a deal with Denmark and Greenland to expand the U.S. security presence in Greenland, a semiautonomous Danish territory, raising the possibility of a diplomatic solution to a U.S.-made threat that nearly upended the Western alliance. The full contours of the deal Mr. Trump was describing were not immediately clear, but shortly after his announcement, leaders of Greenland and Denmark issued statements indicating they expected an agreement to be signed next week during the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The two sides described the agreement in very different terms. Mr. Trump claimed the United States had secured “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in Greenland, while the Danish prime minister said the deal “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of the Kingdom of Denmark. That description would mean the agreement fell well short of Mr. Trump’s longstanding demand of tot...
